Tasks of Living With Others

How many horror stories have there been about roommates? In the few months before moving in, I must have heard hundreds. Like most people, I was very anticipatory about moving into a room with someone I did not know, but after meeting my roommate, I realized how much I had lucked out. We work so well as roommates that we have already applied to be roommates again next fall. We both have similar reasons for being here (academics first, social life second) and we are both music majors, so we understand the amount of work that each of us has to do. The biggest difference in our lifestyles is our sleep schedules. I like to sleep at night, and Richard likes to stay up late at night doing homework and take naps during the day. I have learned to fall asleep with the light on, and his naps do not bother me since I am hardly ever home during the day.
We both understand that living in a (somewhat) clean room is important and although we do tend to get a little messy (a right we have as college students), we both know when it is time to clean up. One of the nicest things about our relationship as roommates is that we are able to talk to each other about problems we have and ask each other for favors. If I really need to get to sleep, I feel comfortable asking him to turn off his light. If he really needs my side of the room to be cleaned up, he feels comfortable asking me to do that. After all the horror stories I heard, I know I am extremely lucky to have a roommate as caring and responsible as Richard.
